London sports grounds turn brown as record heat and drought grip Britain

August 16, 2022

Record heat and drought have turned swathes of lush-green football pitches in London brown. The Hackney Marshes in the British capital’s northeast have 82 pitches for football, rugby and cricket. July 2022 has been the driest month in England since 1935 and some areas in Britain have hit a record-breaking 40 degrees Celsius (104°F). The country has declared a state of drought in eight regions. Kent, Hertfordshire and London are among the areas where water restrictions have been tightened. Authorities have also limited use of hosepipes and sprinklers across cities.
