This platform is managed by SportAccord in collaboration with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and with the support of the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Sport and Sustainability (SandSI) and The Sustainability Report.
Its objective is to:
- Increase the visibility of sustainability initiatives in the field of sport
- Promote knowledge sharing
- Contribute to the improvement of sustainable practices
- Encourage dialogue, coordination and the development of fruitful partnerships
It is targeted at the wider sports community, including International Sports Federations, clubs, media, athletes, event organisers, cities and beyond.
It addresses sustainability in its wider understanding and embraces the 17 Sustainable Development goals defined by the United Nations in September 2015. The multiple facets of sustainability include environmental, economic and social matters.
In fact, true sustainability requires an integrated and holistic approach which cannot be segregated into component parts. For example, climate change may be viewed as an environmental phenomenon, but it also impacts society and economies at many levels. Measures to mitigate or adapt to climate change are therefore relevant to sustainability in its full sense.
