Fishing tournament inspires care for the sea

August 20, 2021

The Troppo Fishing Adventures’ fishing tournament, dubbed the “Junior Fish to the Max 2” (JF2M-2) tournament, was held last Saturday at Utualii.

It attracted eight boats and 14 junior anglers who were all keen to improve on their JF2M-1 showing last month. In total 51 fish were caught for a combined weight of 59 kgs.

Tournament director Henry Penn said that the Junior “Fish To The Max” (JF2M) monthly tournaments is one of the Junior Development Programme that is part of fishing club (SIGFA – Samoa International Game Fishing Association) vision and mission, which is to be recognized and respected as a leading and responsible sport fishing club that encourages sustainable fishing practices and conservation of the marine environment.

The tournament was judged on the boat (team) or Junior Angler that had the most points, based on the total aggregate weight of fish caught per boat (team) or by Junior Angler i.e. where 1kg of fish is equal to 1 point. In addition, points were also awarded to the team/angler when they catch and release any undersized fish, which is part of the club’s efforts in encouraging sustainable fishing practices.

The next JF2M’s 3rd competition is scheduled to be held in September this year.

Junior angler Michael Levi said he loves going out to sea and catching fish as it something he says people here in the Pacific are fortunate to have, as most overseas marine environments have been damaged by pollution and careless fishing methods.

The JF2M-2 held last Saturday was proudly sponsored by Troppo Fishing Adventures Samoa. JF2M-1 held in July was sponsored by R, M & J Keil and the upcoming JF2M-3 in September will be sponsored by Seb & Rene Sports. The following monthly tournaments from October onwards are still available for any local businesses to sponsor.
