Global sports community to celebrate International Women’s Day

March 8, 2021

The global sports community will celebrate #InternationalWomensDay on Monday 8 March, a day marked around the world to recognise the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and raise awareness about women’s equality.

International Women’s Day marks an important opportunity for the global sports community to once again ask itself what more it can do to help accelerate gender equality in sport,GAISF President Raffaele Chiulli said.

I am very encouraged by the ongoing work of International Sports Federations and the sports community to increase visibility for women’s sport. Now, as we look towards the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, we are set to witness the most gender-balanced Games ever, with female athlete participation at 49 per cent, and this is a sign of great progress towards equal representation and an equal playing field.

However, we must continue to choose to challenge, taking action for equality and speaking out against gender bias. So I encourage all our Members to celebrate women’s achievements both on and off the field of play and harness the power of sport to collectively help create an inclusive world with gender equality.

GAISF is encouraging its Members and the global sports community to share their own stories on social media to #ChooseToChallenge and celebrate women in sport.

Be sure to tag @gaisf_sport on Twitter, where we will be sharing some of the best initiatives from International Sports Federations on our feed to mark the occasion.
