IFSC joins Compensaid Program

July 24, 2020

The International Federation of Sport Climbing is proud to announce that it joined CompensAid, a compensation program that supports the development and production of SAF – Sustainable Aviation Fuel – a synthetically produced jet fuel that is the first real alternative to fossil jet fuels. Compared to it, in fact, SAF reduces CO2 emissions by up to 80%.

Furthermore, CompensAid recently started supporting a reforestation initiative in Nicaragua, located near a critical watershed that feeds into one of the country’s most important estuary. Indeed, recent studies proved that reforestation is one of the most effective ways to fight climate change.

The Federation’s first payment was made to compensate the emissions of CO2 generated by the flights that IFSC Staff and Officials took in the first six month of the year.

Earlier this year – and in line with its vision of making the world a better place through sport – the IFSC published the first version of its Sustainability Guidelines. The document follows the International Olympic Committee’s five focus areas: infrastructure and natural sites, sourcing and resource management, mobility, workforce and climate.

IFSC President Marco Scolaris said:

While some of us were already using this system on an individual basis, to mitigate the impact of their travels on the environment, starting in 2020 we decided to allocate a regular, active contribution to CompensAid. Sustainability has always been one of Sport Climbing’s pillars and, on top of that, it is part of who we are. A significant example comes from all the people working at the IFSC headquarters in Torino, who all come to the office by foot or public transportation. Therefore, to be part of this program has been a natural step for the IFSC. Apparently a small one, but full of significance.
