As we approach the COP26 scheduled in Glasgow in November, the Organizing Committee of the 2026 Winter Games continues its discussions and dialogue with Environmental Associations.

A significant week for the entire international community kicks off today in Milan with five days dedicated to discussing the central environmental and climate issues. Youth4Climate and Pre-Cop26 are two events that will mark the route towards Cop26, the annual conference on climate organized by the UN, which this year will see the direct involvement of the Italian government, a strong promoter of Youth4Climate.

The Milano Cortina 2026 Foundation, which places sustainability at the centre of the path leading to the Olympic and Paralympic Games, announces that it has joined the UNFCCC, Sports for Climate Action Framework. The initiative, promoted by the United Nations in partnership with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), aims to accelerate the necessary changes for achieving greenhouse gas neutrality and thus contributing to the implementation of the Paris agreements. The United Nations Framework aims to involve the largest number of partners of the sport ecosystem through concrete actions intended to ensure greater protection of the climate. To date, over 200 organisations have joined and embraced the proposal.

Vincenzo Novari, CEO of the Milano Cortina 2026 Foundation commented: “This is an important moment for the entire Foundation whose two main themes are sustainability and environmental protection. The international community, and all the young people who will fill the streets of Milan from today, is asking us for recognition of an issue that is now urgent not only for our country, but for the whole world. Joining the Sports for Climate Action Framework, promoted by the UN and signed by the IOC among others, represents a further declaration of intent towards the 2026 Games “.

Next Friday, 1 October 2021, a representative of the Foundation’s board, led by Dr. Gloria Zavatta, Sustainability & Legacy Director, will meet the national Environmental Associations to continue the discussion started last January. The goal of the Milano Cortina 2026 Foundation, engaging with the new models proposed by the IOC within the New Norm and the 2020 + 5 Agenda, is to work towards a positive social and environmental legacy for the territories involved.

The opening speeches of Giovanni Malagò, President of the Milano Cortina 2026 Foundation, and its CEO, Vincenzo Novari, will be followed by an in-depth study of issues related to the climate crisis and the commitments taken for the construction of the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Games sports facilities and competition venues.
